2027 Ram 1500 Towing Capacity by Engine, and How Axle Ratio Changes It

The 2027 Ram 1500 towing capacity reaches up to 11,530 lb with the 3.0L Hurricane SO Twin-Turbo, when properly equipped. Here is what each engine is rated to pull and carry, and how drivetrain and axle ratio change it.
- Up to 11,530 lb is the 2027 maximum. Ram lists it for the 3.0L Hurricane SO Twin-Turbo on a 4x2 truck, when properly equipped.
- Most payload comes from the V6. Stellantis lists the 3.6L Pentastar V6 eTorque at up to 2,340 lb of payload, the highest 2027 figure.
- Configuration sets your number. Ram lists separate 4x2 and 4x4 maximums. Ratings vary by cab, bed, drivetrain and axle ratio.
- Tongue weight uses up payload. Ram says payload plus tongue weight cannot exceed the payload capacity, so check both before you hitch up.
How much can a 2027 Ram 1500 tow?
The 2027 Ram 1500 towing capacity reaches up to 11,530 lb with the 3.0L Hurricane SO Twin-Turbo, when properly equipped. That figure comes from Ram's 2027 materials. It is the highest of the 2027 maximums Stellantis lists, and ramtrucks.com shows it on the 4x2 page. Every other engine has its own ceiling, and each one depends on how the truck is built. The 2027 Ram 1500 is the current model year, and Ram's media site lists it as in dealerships now.
The table below lists the maximum Stellantis publishes for each 2027 engine. Read each row as the best case for that engine, not the rating of every truck that has it.
| Engine (2027) | Output | Max towing | Max payload |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.0L Hurricane SO Twin-Turbo I6 | 420 hp / 469 lb-ft | Up to 11,530 lb | Up to 1,880 lb |
| 5.7L HEMI V8 eTorque | 395 hp / 410 lb-ft | Up to 11,370 lb | Up to 1,680 lb |
| 3.0L Hurricane HO Twin-Turbo I6 | 540 hp / 521 lb-ft | Up to 9,480 lb | Up to 1,530 lb |
| 5.7L HEMI V8 | 395 hp / 410 lb-ft | Up to 8,890 lb | Up to 1,150 lb |
| 6.2L supercharged HEMI V8 | 777 hp / 680 lb-ft | Up to 8,580 lb | Up to 1,140 lb |

Which Ram 1500 engine tows the most, and which carries the most?
The 3.0L Hurricane SO tows the most. The 3.6L Pentastar V6 eTorque carries the most payload, at up to 2,340 lb. More horsepower does not always mean a higher towing rating. The Hurricane HO makes 540 hp, more than the Hurricane SO, yet Ram lists it up to 9,480 lb of towing. The 777 hp supercharged 6.2L HEMI V8 is listed up to 8,580 lb.
Ram lists two versions of the 5.7L HEMI V8 for 2027. Both make 395 hp and 410 lb-ft, but their maximums differ. Stellantis lists the eTorque version up to 11,370 lb, and the version without eTorque up to 8,890 lb. Every 2027 engine uses a TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic, according to Stellantis.

If you mostly tow, start with the engine whose maximum clears your trailer with room to spare. If you mostly haul in the bed, the V6 eTorque's payload rating may suit you better. Our sales team can walk you through the build of a specific new Ram 1500 for sale in Miami.
Is 4x4 towing capacity lower than 4x2 on the Ram 1500?
For the engines Ram lists on both pages, yes. Each 2027 4x4 maximum on ramtrucks.com sits below the matching 4x2 maximum. Ram publishes separate engine pages for 4x2 and 4x4 trucks. The Hurricane SO, for example, is rated up to 11,530 lb as a 4x2 and up to 11,370 lb as a 4x4. Ram lists the Hurricane HO on the 4x4 page only.
| Engine (as listed) | 4x2 max towing | 4x4 max towing |
|---|---|---|
| 3.0L Hurricane SO Twin-Turbo | Up to 11,530 lb | Up to 11,370 lb |
| 5.7L HEMI V8 | Up to 11,470 lb | Up to 11,190 lb |
| 3.0L Hurricane HO Twin-Turbo | Not listed | Up to 9,480 lb |
| 3.6L Pentastar V6 eTorque | Up to 8,100 lb | Up to 7,460 lb |
Source: ramtrucks.com 2027 Ram 1500 4x2 and 4x4 engine performance pages, reviewed 10/27/2026. The 4x2 page lists the 5.7L HEMI V8 at up to 11,470 lb; Stellantis lists the 5.7L HEMI V8 eTorque at up to 11,370 lb. When properly equipped.
Notice the two HEMI figures. The ramtrucks.com pages and the Stellantis release use slightly different numbers for the 5.7L HEMI V8. We show each figure with its own source. For a specific truck, ask us to pull the build sheet for its VIN.
How does axle ratio change Ram 1500 towing capacity?
Ram says a higher axle ratio favors towing power and a lower one favors engine efficiency. Your truck's ratio is part of its rating. On its "Before You Buy" towing page, Ram puts it this way: "Find the right balance between towing power (higher axle ratio) and engine efficiency (lower axle ratio)." Ram also says its trucks come with a variety of axle ratios to meet towing needs.
That is why one engine can carry different ratings. The maximums in this article are the top figure for each engine. A truck with the same engine but another axle ratio, cab or bed can be rated lower. We do not list a rating for each ratio here, because we could not verify Ram's per-ratio ratings.

What do GVWR, GCWR and GTWR mean on a Ram 1500?
GVWR, GCWR and GTWR are Ram's weight limits for the loaded truck, the truck and trailer together, and the loaded trailer. Ram defines each one on its towing pages. Knowing them makes any towing figure easier to read.
- GVWR, Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. Ram calls it the total maximum allowable weight of a fully loaded vehicle, including passengers and payload.
- GCWR, Gross Combined Weight Rating. Ram calls it the maximum allowable weight of the towing vehicle and the loaded trailer, including all cargo and passengers.
- GTWR, Gross Trailer Weight Rating. Ram calls it the total weight capability of the trailer plus the maximum allowable cargo in it.
- Payload. What the truck can carry in the cab and bed. Ram counts tongue weight against it.
Ram also shows how the towing number is built: "Subtract the vehicle's curb weight and payload weight from GCWR to find how much your vehicle can tow." In practice, every passenger and every bag in the bed lowers what is left for the trailer.
How much tongue weight should your trailer put on a Ram 1500?
Ram puts tongue weight at roughly 10% of the total trailer load for a conventional trailer. Ram's general towing page gives about 15% for fifth-wheel or gooseneck trailers. Ram defines tongue weight as the weight a loaded trailer puts on the truck's hitch. It warns that too little can cause trailer sway, while too much hurts towing dynamics. Ram adds: "Payload plus tongue weight cannot exceed the payload capacity."
These steps check weights only. Before you tow, read the Trailer Towing section of your truck's owner's manual for its requirements and warnings. The steps follow Ram's definitions; the order is our advice.
- Weigh or look up the loaded trailer. Use the trailer's loaded weight, not its empty weight, and keep it within the trailer's own GTWR.
- Estimate the tongue weight. Ram's rough guide is about 10% of the total trailer load for a conventional trailer.
- Add people and cargo to the tongue weight. That total is the payload you will use, and Ram says it cannot exceed the truck's payload capacity.
- Compare the trailer with the truck's rating. Use the rating for that exact truck, which depends on its engine, drivetrain, cab, bed and axle ratio.
- Stay inside GCWR. The loaded truck and loaded trailer together must stay within the Gross Combined Weight Rating.

Ram's 2027 release lists a digital rearview mirror with tow mode, trailer reverse steering control and trailer-aware blind-spot monitoring, among other features. Treat every item below as available; fitment depends on trim and options. Check the window sticker of the truck you are considering.
- Digital rearview mirror with tow mode. Named in the 2027 Ram 1500 release.
- Trailer Reverse Steering Control. On its towing technology page for Ram trucks, Ram says that after calibration, a Trailer Steering knob controls the trailer's direction while reversing.
- Blind-spot Monitoring with Trailer Tow Detection System. On the same page, Ram says that after calibration, the system can sense trailer length when equipped with Rear Cross Path with Trailer Detection.
- Power trailer-tow mirrors with adjustable convex auxiliary mirrors, listed in the 2027 release.
- Active-leveling air suspension, listed as available in the 2027 release.

How do 2026 Ram 1500 towing ratings compare with 2027?
Ram's 2026 and 2027 Ram 1500 maximums differ. The 2026 Hurricane 4x2 is listed up to 11,610 lb, the 2027 Hurricane SO up to 11,530 lb. Ram's 2026 Ram 1500 pages are still live, and 2026 trucks can still be on dealer lots. So check the model year on the truck before you use any figure. Ram brought the 5.7L HEMI V8 eTorque back to the Ram 1500 for 2026, on select models.
| Engine (2026) | 4x2 towing / payload | 4x4 towing / payload |

What should Miami drivers check before towing a boat or trailer?
Check the truck's exact rating, the loaded trailer weight and the tongue weight, then prepare the truck itself before a long run. If you pull a boat or haul supplies during hurricane season, these are our suggestions, not Ram requirements. Load the boat and gear before you weigh the trailer, since fuel and equipment add up. Heat and heavy rain are part of driving here, so give yourself extra following distance on wet roads.

Do passengers and cargo reduce how much my Ram 1500 can tow?
Yes. Ram explains towing capacity as GCWR minus the truck's curb weight and payload weight. Every passenger and every item in the cab or bed is payload, so a fully loaded truck has less left for the trailer. The trailer's tongue weight also counts against payload, which Ram says cannot be exceeded.
Does the 5.7L HEMI V8 tow more than the Hurricane?
Not by Ram's published 2027 maximums. Stellantis lists the 5.7L HEMI V8 eTorque at up to 11,370 lb. The ramtrucks.com 4x2 page lists the 5.7L HEMI V8 at up to 11,470 lb. Both sit below the Hurricane SO's up to 11,530 lb, when properly equipped.
Does the more powerful Hurricane HO tow more than the Hurricane SO?
No. On Ram's 2027 4x4 page, the 540 hp Hurricane HO is listed at up to 9,480 lb of towing. On the same 4x4 page, the 420 hp Hurricane SO is listed at up to 11,370 lb. Power and towing rating are separate numbers, so always check the rating, not the horsepower.
What axle ratio is best for towing with a Ram 1500?
Ram says a higher axle ratio favors towing power and a lower one favors engine efficiency. It adds that its trucks come with a variety of axle ratios. The right choice depends on how heavy and how often you tow. Check Ram's towing chart, or ask our sales team to pull the build sheet for a specific VIN.
Does tongue weight count against a Ram 1500's payload?
Yes. Ram states that payload plus tongue weight cannot exceed the payload capacity. A trailer with a heavy tongue therefore leaves less room for passengers and cargo in the truck. Ram's rough guide for a conventional trailer is a tongue weight of about 10% of the total trailer load.
How do I work out how much my Ram 1500 can tow?
Ram explains it with the Gross Combined Weight Rating. Subtract the truck's curb weight and payload weight from GCWR to find how much it can tow. Then check that the result does not exceed the truck's own towing rating, and that the trailer stays within its own GTWR.
What do hitch classes mean?
Hitch classes group hitches by how much they are rated to handle. On its general towing page, Ram says a Class 1 hitch is rated for around 2,000 pounds. A Class 5, Ram says, can handle up to 23,000 pounds. The hitch rating, the truck's rating and the trailer's rating all apply, so check each one before you tow.
Which Ram 1500 carries the most payload?
For 2027, Stellantis lists the 3.6L Pentastar V6 eTorque at up to 2,340 lb of maximum payload, the highest figure for any 2027 engine. On the ramtrucks.com 4x4 page, the same engine is listed up to 1,770 lb. Payload covers passengers, cargo and the trailer's tongue weight.
What does "when properly equipped" mean in Ram towing figures?
We read it as: the maximum applies only to a truck built in the configuration Ram rated. Ram's disclosure adds that additional options, equipment, passengers and cargo weight may affect payload and towing weights. Two trucks with the same engine can carry different ratings, so use the figures for the exact truck.
